The Revenue and Expenses summary
What the figures on the Summary tab mean, how to attach a document to a transaction and what “documents need review” means.
Updated
The Summary shows at a glance what you earned and spent, and where a document is still missing. There are two of them: one for your revenue and one for your expenses.
Where to find the Summary
- Revenue: Click Invoices in the sidebar, then the Summary tab. Next to it are the Invoices, Clients and Products tabs.
- Expenses: Click Expenses in the sidebar. The Summary opens straight away. Next to it are the Payments tab (your supplier bills and Bill Payment) and the Vendors tab.
Both pages work the same way. From top to bottom you see actions, three figures, filters and your transactions by month.
The actions
At the top are cards for your next steps.
On the revenue side:
- Issue an invoice and send it to your client
- Upload invoices issued outside of Norman
- Review transactions without a document
On the expenses side:
- Upload an expense invoice or receipt
- Review transactions without a document
- Add a bill and pay it from Norman
The three figures
- Revenue, last 30 days or Expenses, last 30 days: the total of the last 30 days.
- Revenue in or Expenses in with the year, for example Revenue in 2026: the total since 1 January of the current year.
- Revenue without a document or Expenses without a document: the number of transactions without a document since 1 January of last year.
The two totals are net of VAT. Norman counts them as in the BWA, so they match your profit and loss.
Transactions you marked as Not required do not count as “without a document”. Bank fees without an invoice of their own are a typical example.
The filters
Below the figures are three filters. They work as on the transactions page under Accounting.
- Period: It starts at All time. Pick a preset such as Current month or Last year, or choose your own dates in the calendar.
- Status: All statuses, Done or Not finalized.
- Documents: All documents, With documents or Without documents.
If no transaction matches, Norman shows “Nothing matches these filters.”
Your transactions by month
Below that, every booked transaction of this side appears as a card, grouped by month. Each month row shows:
- the month;
- open work, for example 3 without a document or 2 to review;
- the month's total, net of VAT.
A month with no open work has no badge. Click the row to open or close the month. The newest month is already open.
In an open month, cards without a document come first. A card shows the name, date, category and the bank amount. That amount includes VAT; the month total does not.
A name and amount in grey mean the transaction is finalized. In black and bold, it is still open. Read Edit transactions.
Click a card to open the transaction details. There you change the category or the VAT, for example.
Attach a document to a transaction
If a document is missing, the card shows a Drop a document area. You have two ways:
- Drag the file onto the area. Norman uploads it and attaches it to the transaction.
- Click the area. Attach document opens. Pick an uploaded document or one of your Norman invoices, or upload a new file.
Norman takes PDF, XML, PNG, JPG, JPEG and WEBP. The card then shows a preview of the document.
“Documents need review”
On the Documents page, each month has a folder. If that folder holds documents that are not linked to a transaction yet, the month row shows … to review. The open month then starts with the card … documents need review.
Click Review documents. Norman shows you one document after another. You match it to an existing transaction or create a new transaction from it. Assign documents to transactions explains how.
