Ask Norman: chat, voice and files on mobile

Ask a useful question, dictate a task and choose whether a file is a receipt or context for the conversation.

Updated

Use the Norman tab when you want help with a task or an explanation of your business records. For example: “Explain my expenses for August” or “Help me prepare an invoice. Ask me for the missing details.”

1. Send your first question

  1. Open Norman in the bottom navigation.
  2. Type your question in the message field. Include the period and the result you want.
  3. Read the AI consent information if Norman asks for it.
  4. Tap the send button and wait for the answer.
  5. Check the answer and any resulting record or action card.

For a question rather than a change, say so: “Explain this transaction; do not change it.” AI can make mistakes. Review amounts, dates and proposed changes, and ask your tax advisor about uncertain tax treatment.

The What can I do? area, where shown, helps you find tasks without having to invent a prompt.

2. Dictate instead of typing

  1. Tap the microphone beside the message field.
  2. Allow the requested microphone or speech-recognition permission if you want to use voice input.
  3. Speak your request, then stop dictation.
  4. Review and correct the text before sending it.

Dictation fills the message field; it is not a live telephone conversation. If Voice note is offered in the attachment menu, it lets you record a longer note for transcription. Follow its recording controls and check the transcript.

If voice input is unavailable, you can still type. Check Norman's permissions in your phone settings and try again in a quiet place.

3. Choose the right kind of attachment

Tap +. Where the two options are shown:

  • Receipt or invoice: starts the bookkeeping document flow.
  • Something to look at: adds a photo, screenshot or PDF as context for your message. Wait for its upload to finish, add your question and send.

A context attachment does not, by itself, book an expense. Conversely, choosing the receipt flow can start processing the document before you type a message. See the receipt guide.

Sources and history

Sources, where available, lets you use connected services in chat. Connection setup can open an authenticated web screen; availability depends on your account and the service.

Use the history control to look back at previous messages. For a complete bookkeeping record, open Accounting or Invoices, not just the chat response.

An answer stopped or an action timed out? Check the relevant record before asking Norman to create or send it again. Contact support with the error if the result is unclear.
