The best AI accounting software for Germany must fit your bookkeeping and tax work as well as your preferred assistant. Reading a profit report, creating an invoice, and submitting a tax return are three different buying requirements.
For freelancers, UGs and GmbHs in Germany who want accounting and tax workflows connected to Claude or ChatGPT, Norman is our first pick. If you already use another platform, check its available connections first. Switching accounting systems may add work without improving the AI task you need.
This guide compares six options, including tools with built-in AI and tools that need a separate MCP connection. For Pennylane, check the documented MCP service against your German account before treating it as an available feature.
About this comparison: Norman publishes this guide and appears in it. We reviewed public vendor documentation and integration repositories on 15 September 2026. These are recommendations by use case, not results from a hands-on benchmark. A feature described in documentation still needs a check against your country, plan and account permissions.
Best AI accounting software for Germany: the shortlist
| Platform | Best fit in this guide | Connection reviewed | What the assistant can do | Main buying limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Norman | German freelancers and small companies that want connected accounting and tax workflows | Official hosted MCP; Claude connection and ChatGPT app | Work with transactions, clients, invoices and guided tax workflows, depending on available tools | Free accounting has AI limits; tax filing requires a paid plan |
| BuchhaltungsButler | German businesses that want receipt automation and an optional custom AI connection | Built-in AI; community MCP server reviewed | Recognise receipts in the app; use supported read and write tools through the bridge | API access and technical setup needed for MCP |
| Lexware Office | Existing users with technical help for a custom connection | Community MCP server reviewed | Read records; enable supported write actions separately | You manage the bridge and API credentials |
| sevDesk | Existing users who want a configurable MCP bridge | Community MCP server reviewed | Work with contacts, invoices and receipts through its API | Requires API access and technical setup |
| Accountable | Self-employed people in Germany who prefer AI help inside their tax app | Built-in AI tax assistant | Answer questions using business context inside Accountable | External Claude, ChatGPT or MCP access was not verified in this review |
| Pennylane | Existing Pennylane users, subject to availability in their account | Official hosted MCP documented | Read invoices, transactions and reports | Read-only; confirm access for the German product edition |
For BuchhaltungsButler, Lexware Office and sevDesk, we verified community projects. We did not verify a vendor-hosted MCP service. That distinction identifies who supplies the connection; it does not mean these products lack AI features.
How to choose accounting software with an MCP connection
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard that lets an AI assistant use tools supplied by another application. An accounting connection might let the assistant find an invoice, retrieve a report or prepare a document.
The accounting platform holds your records. Claude or ChatGPT provides the conversation. The connector determines which records and actions the assistant can access.
Choose the connection that fits your team
- Built-in AI: you use the accounting app's own assistant. This can suit you even if it cannot connect to your preferred external assistant.
- Official hosted connection: the accounting vendor runs the connection. You usually sign in and grant access, without running a server yourself.
- Official developer MCP: the vendor supplies code, but someone must configure and operate it. An official repository does not automatically mean a one-click ChatGPT app.
- Community MCP: another developer supplies the bridge. Include setup, updates and support ownership in your buying decision.
An API alone is not a ready-to-use Claude or ChatGPT connection. Likewise, a local MCP server shown working in Claude Desktop does not prove it works in a browser-based assistant. Check the exact client you use. Our accounting MCP server overview explains the technical options in more detail.
Choose the work before the software
Start with a sentence such as: “I want Claude to show overdue invoices,” or “I want ChatGPT to prepare an invoice for review.” Then check whether the connector exposes that action.
For tax work, name the return and the country. A connection that can read a VAT report may not prepare or submit it. A tool that creates invoices does not automatically cover annual accounts. For a German company, compare the underlying product using our GmbH accounting software guide.
Finally, compare the full cost: the accounting plan, the AI assistant plan, any API or connector charges, and the time needed to maintain the integration. Use the renewal price and billing period, not just an introductory offer.
Six accounting platforms compared
1. Norman: our pick for connected accounting and tax workflows in Germany
Norman brings invoicing, bookkeeping and German tax workflows into the same product. Its official MCP connection lets you use supported tools from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other compatible clients.
You connect through Norman sign-in. The hosted service means you do not need to run a local bridge. The setup guide covers each client and explains how to choose the correct company.
Why choose it: you want to work on your German business finances from the AI assistant you already use. You can start with transaction and invoice questions, then use available tools for preparation and guided workflows. The tools returned by your connection define what you can do in that session.
What to check: confirm the particular tax return and action you need. Preparing data, reviewing a return and submitting it are separate steps. Your plan and the connected tools affect availability.
Cost: invoicing and bookkeeping are free, including the connection to Claude and ChatGPT, with AI usage limits. Tax filing requires a paid plan. For self-employed customers:
- Klein: €9/month billed yearly, or €12/month with standard monthly billing. Annual tax declarations for Kleinunternehmer require yearly billing.
- Pro: €21/month billed yearly, or €28/month with standard monthly billing, for self-employed customers who charge VAT.
These prices exclude VAT and temporary discounts. UG and GmbH customers use separate company plans. Check the full pricing table for filing coverage, bank connections and AI limits.
2. BuchhaltungsButler: an option for receipt automation and custom AI workflows
BuchhaltungsButler combines AI receipt recognition, automatic matching of receipts and payments, and accounting workflows with DATEV export. BuchhaltungsButler product overview.
Why choose it: you want to automate receipt processing in a German accounting product, with the option to add an external assistant. The community MCP project by ohneben documents read and write tools for receipts, transactions and reports. You operate that bridge yourself.
What to check: built-in AI does not require this bridge. For MCP, you need API access and a compatible client. BuchhaltungsButler's API setup guide explains the required credentials. Check the bridge's actual tool list and approval behaviour; do not assume that filing features in the app are available through MCP.
Cost: include the accounting subscription, API access and bridge maintenance. Check whether the API client is included in your plan or needs an add-on on the pricing page.
3. Lexware Office: an option if you can maintain a community bridge
Lexware Office has an official API. The community MCP server by Jannik Wempe documents access to contacts, sales documents and bookkeeping records. It is read-only by default, with a separate option to enable writes.
Why choose it: you already rely on Lexware Office and have someone who can set up and maintain the connection. This lets you evaluate an AI workflow before deciding whether to migrate your books.
What to check: the project requires an API key and a local runtime. Confirm your plan's API access, the client's connection method, and who will fix the integration when it breaks. Community code does not establish vendor support for that bridge.
Cost: include your Lexware plan and integration maintenance. A free code repository does not make the full workflow free.
4. sevDesk: an option for users with API access and technical support
sevDesk provides an official API. The community codestra MCP project documents tools for contacts, invoices and receipts, including actions that change records. Its setup uses a sevDesk API token and a local server.
Why choose it: your team wants to keep sevDesk and can operate a custom connection. Start by testing the few tasks you need, rather than choosing by the number of tools listed.
What to check: API access, installation, client compatibility and the handling of write actions. Treat the project's documented features as a starting point for your trial, not proof that every action works in your account.
Cost: budget for the eligible sevDesk plan, your AI client and ongoing support for the bridge.
5. Accountable: an option when you prefer AI inside the tax app
Accountable's AI tax assistant uses business context inside its own product. Its German documentation describes help with tax questions, receipts and tax estimates for self-employed users. Accountable's AI assistant overview.
Why choose it: your priority is help inside a tax app, and using Claude or ChatGPT directly is optional.
What to check: we did not verify an official external MCP connection in this review. If working from Claude or ChatGPT is a firm requirement, ask for current connection documentation before choosing it.
Cost: compare the Accountable plan that includes your required accounting and filing features. Built-in AI and external AI connectivity are separate buying criteria.
6. Pennylane: an option for existing users after checking access
Pennylane offers a German product. Its MCP documentation describes an official hosted, read-only server. It can retrieve data but cannot change records or submit returns.
Why choose it: your company or practice already uses Pennylane and wants to analyse its books with an external assistant.
What to check: the linked connection guide is for the French product and names the Essentiel plan for company access. We have not verified equivalent MCP access for German accounts. Confirm availability before including this feature in a buying decision.
Cost and setup: check your local Pennylane plan and your assistant's connector requirements. The documented hosted service avoids local server setup, but its read-only scope will not suit invoice creation or tax submission from chat.
Try these tasks before you commit
Use the same small set of records when you compare tools. Start with read access and a draft task.
- Retrieve records: “Show unpaid invoices for this company. Include invoice numbers, amounts and due dates.” Compare the answer with the accounting app.
- Explain a total: “Break down last month's expenses and identify the records behind each total.” Check dates, missing records and whether the result includes all pages of data.
- Prepare a draft: “Prepare an invoice for this client and show the details before sending.” Confirm whether the tool saves a real draft or only writes text in the chat. A read-only connector should explain its limit.
- Check tax scope: ask which specific return the product supports and whether the connection can read, prepare or submit it. Verify the answer against the product documentation and your plan.
- Check access: confirm the selected company, permissions and approval controls. Check how to disconnect and which provider handles data once it enters the AI conversation.
Choose the platform that completes your recurring task with the least setup your team can reliably support. For a new German business that wants connected bookkeeping and tax workflows, start with Norman's MCP page. For an established business, test the connection to your current accounting system first.
FAQ
What is the best accounting software for Claude or ChatGPT?
Our pick for German freelancers and small companies that want connected accounting and tax workflows is Norman. If you already use another platform, first check its available connections. The right choice depends on your country, existing books and whether you need answers, drafts or completed actions.
Does AI accounting software always have an MCP connection?
No. A product can use AI for receipt processing or in-app questions without connecting to an external assistant. Look for setup instructions for the exact assistant you use and a list of the tools it can access.
Can I use Norman with Claude or ChatGPT for free?
Norman's free plan includes invoicing, bookkeeping and the connection to Claude and ChatGPT, with AI usage limits. Tax filing requires a paid plan. Your AI assistant may have separate subscription or workspace requirements. See Norman pricing for current details.
Can an MCP connection file my taxes?
Only when the accounting product, your plan and the connected tools support that specific filing action. Reading a tax report is not the same as submitting a return. Check the return, company and reporting period before approving a submission.
