Start for freeHow the StBVV works
Value: Every fee depends on a value, such as income for the EÜR or turnover for bookkeeping. A table in the StBVV gives the full fee for it.
Fee range: The firm charges a fraction of the full fee, for the EÜR 5/10 to 30/10. For an average case the middle usually applies, the mid-range fee.
New tables: Since 1 July 2025 the tables are about 6% higher. Time-based work is billed at €66 to €164 an hour.
Expenses and VAT: On top come a 20% allowance for postage and telecoms, at most €20 per service, and 19% VAT.
What you typically pay for
Self-employed: EÜR, income tax and VAT returns, the trade tax return for a trade business, plus VAT advance returns or ongoing bookkeeping.
GmbH and UG: Bookkeeping, annual accounts, corporate, trade and VAT returns. Notes, a tax balance sheet or deriving the taxable result are often billed on top.
VAT advance returns: If the firm keeps the books, the advance returns are covered by the bookkeeping fee. Otherwise each return is billed separately.
Flat fees: Many firms agree monthly flat fees or hourly rates. The StBVV remains the benchmark to measure such offers against.
FAQ
What does a tax advisor cost for the self-employed?
With €80,000 turnover and €30,000 expenses, the mid-range fees come to about €2,100 a year for the EÜR, tax returns and monthly VAT returns, with expenses and VAT. If the firm also keeps the books, it is about €3,650.
What does a tax advisor cost a GmbH per month?
For a GmbH with €400,000 turnover and a €120,000 balance sheet total, mid-range fees come to about €8,700 a year, roughly €725 a month: bookkeeping, annual accounts and the three tax returns.
What is the mid-range fee (Mittelgebühr)?
The middle between the lowest and the highest rate, such as 17.5/10 in a range of 5/10 to 30/10. It is the benchmark for an average case; the firm sets the fee case by case by scope and difficulty.
Can a tax advisor charge a flat fee?
Yes, if it is agreed. The agreement must be in text form and can exceed the statutory fee; a lower fee is only allowed out of court and if it stays appropriate (§§ 4, 4a StBVV). Without an agreement the StBVV applies.
Are tax advisor fees deductible?
Fees for bookkeeping, profit calculation and business taxes are business expenses. The private part, such as the income tax return itself, is not deductible.
