FAQ
Is cashback on business purchases taxable?
It is generally not taxed as separate income. Instead it reduces the acquisition cost or the business expense of the underlying purchase.
What happens to the input VAT?
It is reduced accordingly. The credit is a reduction of consideration under § 17 UStG, so the input VAT deduction has to be corrected in the period the credit falls in.
What if I get cashback on a private purchase?
Cashback on private purchases is a refund of part of the purchase price and is generally irrelevant for tax, provided the purchase really was privately motivated.
How do I record cashback and bonuses cleanly?
Assign each credit to the original expense rather than booking it as separate income. That keeps the business expense and input VAT consistent even when purchase and credit fall in different months.
