If you are not obliged to file, skipping the return usually means giving money away: the voluntary German tax return (Antragsveranlagung) recovers around €1,095 per year on average, and you can file it up to four years retroactively. As of today that means 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 are still open. This guide walks through the process step by step.
The short version
- The 4-year rule: a voluntary return for a tax year must arrive at the Finanzamt by 31 December of the fourth year after it.
- Tax year 2022: only until 31 December 2026. After that, the refund expires with no replacement.
- Each year is its own return, with that year's numbers and documents.
- No trap: filing voluntarily once does not oblige you to file every year afterwards.
- Typical refund drivers: commuting costs, home office, work equipment, training, relocation, household services, church tax, donations.
Who can file voluntarily?
Anyone who is not already obliged to file: typically employees in tax class 1 or 4 without side income. Whether you are obliged is a two-minute check with our guide Do I have to file a German tax return?
And the common worry is wrong: filing voluntarily does not create an obligation for future years. Every year is assessed on its own.
Which years can you still file?
| Tax year | File until | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 31 Dec 2026 | Last chance this year |
| 2023 | 31 Dec 2027 | open |
| 2024 | 31 Dec 2028 | open |
| 2025 | 31 Dec 2029 | open |
What counts is arrival at the Finanzamt. Do not file 2022 at 11 pm on 31 December: with electronic submission via ELSTER, the transmission timestamp counts, so leave a buffer.
Why filing retroactively almost always pays
Monthly wage tax assumes your year was perfectly average. Everything that deviates only comes back through the return:
- Work-related expenses above the flat allowance: commuting distance, the home office allowance, a laptop, professional literature, training.
- Special expenses: church tax, donations, retirement contributions.
- Extraordinary burdens: medical costs, care costs.
- Household services and tradespeople: partially deductible straight from the tax owed.
- Years with a job change, income gap, or relocation often return the most, because wage tax was furthest off there.
If the assessment ends in a payment instead of a refund, you can withdraw the application in the objection procedure. The risk of a voluntary return is therefore small.
How to file retroactively, step by step
- Collect documents per year: the wage tax certificate (Lohnsteuerbescheinigung) for that year from your employer, receipts for larger expenses, and your tax ID (Steuer-Identifikationsnummer).
- One year at a time: each return belongs in its own year's forms, with that year's allowances and limits. Norman picks the right year automatically.
- Walk the deductions: Norman asks about the typical items and shows the expected refund live.
- Submit: transmission runs via ELSTER directly, and you do not need your own ELSTER account.
- Check the assessment: the tax assessment (Steuerbescheid) arrives after a few weeks. If it deviates from your return, you have one month to object.
With Norman, each tax year costs €19 one-time, you pay only when you submit, and joint filing is included. Filing four years costs €76, against roughly €4,000 at average refunds. If you prefer, you can do all of it in chat from Claude or ChatGPT, in English.
FAQ
How many years back can I file a German tax return?
Four years, if you are not obliged to file. In 2026 you can still file for tax years 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Until when can I file the 2022 return?
Until 31 December 2026. The return must have arrived at the Finanzamt by then. After that, the refund is lost.
Do I then have to file every year?
No. A voluntary return creates no obligation for future years. The filing obligation is assessed fresh for every year.
What if the voluntary return ends in a payment?
You can withdraw the application in the objection procedure as long as the assessment is not final. That keeps the risk small.
Do I need old receipts to file retroactively?
You need the wage tax certificate for each year and evidence for larger expenses. Receipts are only submitted when the Finanzamt asks for them.
